The twenty-seven Judges of the 2012 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National take their jobs very seriously. With an average of over 20-years masonry trade experience, these professionals come from all over North America to judge at this event. There are in fact, more judges than there are competing masons at the National. Each mason must meet the rules of the competition exactly or deductions are made from the total brick count.
As the theatrical singer Sarah Elizabeth Holmes from Las Vegas sang the National Anthem, "The Star Spangle Banner," she was accompanied by four U.S. Air Force Honor Guard in full service dress from the Nellis Air Force Base. After the time & energy was expired and each QUIKRETE 5000 Challenger was awarded $500 in cold cash and handed an ice cold beer, which incidentally kicked off the "Beer Cam" coverage.
There's no denying that the masonry trade tends to be a family affair, but how much do the non-mason members of these families really know about laying brick? Boral Brick set out to find exactly that, challenging Roberta Moyle (IA), Kathy Freeman (Australia), Sharon Campbell (TN), and Connie Jones (AZ), to do what their significant others do every day! Judged by Paul Samples, Boral Brick, Roberta Moyle took home top honors as the Amateur Bricklaying Competition Champion and an engraved commemorative brick.
Widely recognized by the construction industry as the premier event at the WOC/WOM, the success of the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 is largely attributed to the support of its sponsors. Working together to promote the masonry trade and its members, numerous companies pull together by making both cash and product contributions.
